Frequently Asked Questions

Is this really completely free?

Yes, we know it does sound too good to be true, but all of the home upgrades we provide are completely, 100% free to you as the customer. We receive payment from the Government or from the Utility Companies. The GBIS (Green Homes Grant) and ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation) schemes are designed to help eligible homeowners access energy-saving improvements at no cost. Under these schemes, you may be able to receive funding to install energy-efficient measures such as insulation, heating upgrades, and more.

For those who qualify, the cost of the improvements is either fully covered by government funding or contributions from participating energy companies.

If you’re unsure whether you qualify, we can help assess your eligibility and guide you through the process. There’s no charge for this service, and you’re under no obligation to proceed further if you choose not to.

The UK government provides various grants to assist households in lowering energy bills and enhancing home energy efficiency. The key schemes include:

  • ECO4 Scheme: Aimed at supporting low-income and vulnerable households, this scheme offers a comprehensive ‘whole-house’ upgrade, covering grants for heating and insulation improvements.
  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS): This scheme offers up to £7,500 to help with the installation of a heat pump.
  • Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS): Eligible households can receive one insulation upgrade to improve their home’s energy efficiency.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme is the latest phase of the Energy Company Obligation program. This government initiative requires energy suppliers to fund home upgrades for low-income and vulnerable households, helping to reduce their energy consumption. The scheme offers grants for various energy-saving improvements, such as insulation, heating upgrades, and, in some cases, renewable energy installations. Eligible homes and households can benefit from comprehensive, whole-home upgrades that significantly enhance energy efficiency.

You may be eligible for an ECO4 grant if:

  • You receive income-related benefits like Universal Credit, tax credits or Pension Credit.
  • You live in a home with an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G or No EPC
  • You qualify under your local council’s ECO Flex criteria, which may take health issues or low income into account.

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a government initiative aimed at insulating 300,000 homes annually. It includes households that do not qualify for ECO4 but still need help with insulation to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy bills.

To qualify, your property must have an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G (or no EPC, but the home requires insulation).

Additionally, households in the general group can apply if they have a Council Tax band of A-D in England, or A-E in Scotland or Wales.

UK government energy grants can cover a range of energy-saving improvements, such as:

  • Loft insulation
  • Cavity wall insulation
  • Roof insulation
  • Solid wall insulation
  • Heat pump grants
  • Boiler replacements (for eligible households under the ECO4 scheme)
  • Broken boiler grants
  • Solar panel installations (available in certain cases where a renewable heating source is used under ECO4 – usually for properties not connected to mains gas. Ofgem rules state that solar panels cannot be installed in homes with mains gas, and are only available for properties with heat pumps or electric heating).

Yes, landlords can apply for ECO4, BUS, and GBIS grants, provided their properties and tenants meet the eligibility criteria. These grants can assist landlords in enhancing the energy efficiency of their rental properties, which benefits both tenants and property values. However, the specific grants available may vary depending on the scheme.

The timeline for receiving a government energy grant can vary based on the type of improvement and your individual circumstances. ECO4 grants may take longer as they involve whole-house upgrades, while GBIS grants are focused on a single insulation installation. Generally, from the initial application to the completion of the installation, the process can take anywhere from a few days to a few months. Bloxt always aim to complete any jobs as quickly as possible and our general turnaround time at the moment in within two weeks of enquiry.

Government grants such as ECO4 and GBIS can help lower your energy bills, increase home comfort, and reduce your carbon footprint. These grants offer funding for essential energy-saving upgrades, enabling households to experience long-term savings while also contributing to environmental sustainability.
